SOME are quirky, some are sophisticated, but all have the freshness of youth sewn into every stitch.

They are the 84 entries in this year's Hunter Valley Young Fashion Designer Awards and Cocktail Party.

Fifty-six young designers will model a mix of modern, classic and the edgy at the awards at Maitland Gaol tonight.

They will vie for $7000 in prize money and a chance to showcase their amazing talent.

"The standout feature this year is that the students of fashion really know their market," Maitland City Council marketing and business strategy executive manager Roger Stephan said.

The awards have attracted TAFE, university and school students aged 17 to 30.

Adam Mew, of East Maitland, the only male in the awards and in his Newcastle TAFE fashion design class, will wear his entry of a tailored business shirt with leather trim and metal buttons and cream business pants with stop stitching and panels.
